Red Barn Farm Market

Our barn is fully decorated and ready for you to browse.  For decorating your home, we have mums, ornamental kale & cabbage, hay bales, Indian corn, corn stalks, and a few pumpkins. (More of these will be arriving soon!)  To eat, we have a great variety of squash, potatoes, tomatoes, super sweet corn, beans, beets, carrots, kohlrabi, eggplant, cabbage, yellow watermelon, cucumbers, peppers, leek & broccoli.  Also, popcorn, apple cider & honey make fabulous fall treats.  By this weekend, there will be caramel apples & apple donuts too.  Yum!

Ok - It's the height of the homegrown produce season.  That really sweet sweet corn called Mirai is available right now.  For all of you who are confused by the green bag phenomenon, Sue has written a poem:

             
          Mirai Corn
It's grown at the Red Barn
But we have no green yarn
So we've omitted the mesh bag
And lowered the price tag!

Really - it tastes just as good when you take it home in a plastic bag!!

Also - our own sweet tomatoes are being picked. They taste especially good in a dry year.  Let us know if you want a canning quantity (815-338-4343).  That should be starting next week. 

The muskmelons and red and yellow seedless watermelons are fabulous right now.  Also available are honeydews & crenshaws.  All homegrown!

Other homegrown vegetables: green & yellow beans, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, beets, carrots, zucchini, patty pans, cucumbers, green peppers, walla walla onions, pickles.

There is also a small amount of Illinois peaches.

Are you all doing your rain dance? We are still looking for a little relief this summer.  So far we have had 1/2 inch in June and 2/10 inches in July.  Amazingly enough, we still some vegetables.

Sweet Corn has come in.  The ears are small but the corn is super sweet.  We are also starting to get some Pickling Cucumbers.  So, if you are interested in those, you need to place your order right away. ($30 for 25 lbs)  We are also picking: Cauliflower, Broccoli, Kohlrabi, Cabbage, Green Onions, Carrots, Beets, Zucchini, and Eggplant.  There is also a limited quantity of Green &Yellow Beans and Lettuce.  We finally have some tasty Kentucky tomatoes too.

We heard some bad news out of Michigan.  Due to the early warmth in March and freezing temperatures in April, there may not be peaches or apples from there. Oh no!!

Teachers - we are taking reservations for school tours.  Please call early.

Thank you all so much for your great response to our broken bags of potting soil.  They are all gone!!

The vegetables are really starting to roll in now.  Besides asparagus and green onions, we now have several kinds of lettuce and spinach.  Try these with one of our great McCutcheon Salad Dressings.  The peas and radishes may be coming in by next weekend, so let's "give peas a chance."

All through June, we will be having plant sales so stop in and check it out.  You need a few more touches of color for your summer yard parties, right?  There is still a large selection of gorgeous hanging baskets, Proven Winters, and perennials

Our hours are 9-5 right now but that will change to 8-6 beginning April 28.

Come out and take a stroll through the greenhouses to enjoy a little taste of spring.  There's hanging baskets, hundreds of proven winter annuals, flats of flowers and vegetable plants and a huge selection of perennials.  It is all a colorful treat for the eyes.

To go with all these plants, check out the newest selection of pottery including pots, bird baths, concrete benches and statuary, and fountains.
